Sleeve Gastrectomy

Sleeve Gastrectomy

Sleeve gastrectomy is one of the surgical procedures that take place at the Specialty Hospital for weight-loss in which the stomach is reduced to about 15% of its original size, done under the careof our competent surgeons. By the surgical removal of a large portion of the stomach along the greater curvature. This results in a formation of a sleeve or tube like structure(in the size and shape of a banana). The procedure permanently reduces the size of the stomach, although there could be some dilatation of the stomach later on in life. The procedure isperformed laparoscopically and is irreversible. Today sleeve gastrectomy is the fastest-growing weight loss surgery option worldwide.

Procedure: Sleeve gastrectomy is a restrictive surgical procedure as it restricts the amount of food that the stomach can hold.

To gain access to the abdominal cavity, the surgeon in the Specialty Hospital makes small incisions in the abdomen through which surgical instruments are inserted through ports, which are placed into the incisions. A video camera called a laparoscope provides a view of the abdomen during the procedure.

Indications of sleeve gastrectomy

Sleeve gastrectomy may be considered when BMI (calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared) is greater than 40 or if BMI is greater than 35 and a patient has 1 or more weight-related medical conditions, and if dietary, lifestyle, and other treatments have been ineffective. Before surgery, patients usually undergo several months of evaluations and education by our medical care team to ensure that surgery is appropriate for them.

What to expect after surgery:

Most patients are in the hospital for 1 to 2 days and can resume their usual physical activities within 4 to 6 weeks after surgery. Medications are given for pain and nausea. Opioid pain medications are usually needed only for a short period following surgery, if at all. Most patients also receive medication to prevent blood clots. Walking helps to prevent blood clots, and after having this surgery, you will be encouraged to get out of bed as soon as possible by our health care staff. Physical activity is important after surgery to maximize weight loss and prevent weight regain. The diet immediately after the operation starts with small volumes of liquid that are gradually advanced to well-chewed solid food over several weeks. The health care team will help plan a balanced intake of protein and other nutrients. To reduce the risk of bone density loss and nutritional deficiencies, the health care team will discuss vitamin supplements and monitoring as part of regular follow-up visits and health maintenance.

HOW MUCH WEIGHT WILL PATIENTS LOSE?

The amount of weight patients will lose depend on a number of factors. These factors include, diet, exercise, lifestyle, and the overall commitment to changing old habits. The size of the new sleeve can make a difference in overall weight loss.

Assuming the patient does everything right.By changingthe diet and creating new healthy habits with exercising on a regular basis. On average people lose 60%-70% of their excess weight with gastric sleeve surgery.
